I love a good par-3 course. People sometimes think you need a long, grand golf course to have fun, but that is not true. Give me nine short holes, a bit of sunshine, and someone who has never held a club, and I promise you a happy afternoon. My name is Marina Romanik, and helping golfers find that first spark of joy is my favourite part of the job.

A friendly little course

Golfbaan Zeumeren sits in Voorthuizen, in the green heart of Gelderland. It is a 9-hole par-3 course, which means every single hole is short. You do not need to hit the ball far here. You need to hit it well — and that is a wonderful thing to learn on. On a big course, distance can feel scary. On short holes, you stop worrying about power and you start enjoying the game. Many new golfers tell me the same story: on a course like this, golf finally clicks.

Because the holes are short, this is a perfect place for beginners, for juniors, and for anyone coming back to golf after a long break. Children love it, because they can reach the green and feel like real golfers on their very first visit. There is a golf academy on site, so lessons and learning are part of the atmosphere here, and after your round you can relax at the restaurant or sit on the terrace with a cold drink. Small course, warm welcome — this is what Zeumeren does well.

One good thing to know before you come: you do need a GVB baanpermissie or a handicap card to play. I know that can sound like a hurdle, but honestly it is a small and worthwhile step, and it opens the door to golf courses all over the Netherlands. A beginner lesson or two is the easiest way to earn that qualification and get straight onto the grass — and Zeumeren, with its short, forgiving holes, is exactly the kind of place where that first real round feels within reach.

I teach at Chi Chi Golf in Utrecht and at Golfschool Hoenderdaal in Driebergen, in Dutch, English, Ukrainian and Russian, for all ages and levels. A green fee here is only €21 for 9 holes — one of the friendliest prices in Gelderland — so once you have your baanpermissie, real golf is very affordable.
