Golfclub De Haar (Haarzuilens)

Golfclub De Haar

Where good golf begins

Hi, I’m Marina Romanik, a PGA golf instructor in Utrecht. I love helping people fall for this game — children, adults, beginners, and players who want to sharpen up. I teach in Dutch, English, Ukrainian and Russian, so wherever you come from, we will understand each other on the first tee. Golf should feel fun, and that is how I teach it.

Parkland golf by the castle

Golfclub De Haar sits in Haarzuilens, only about ten minutes by car from the centre of Utrecht. It opened in 1974 and was shaped by the respected designers Frank Pennink and Bruno Steensels, and it has matured into a gorgeous parkland course.

What makes it special is the setting. The 18 holes wind through a 58-hectare park full of old oaks, chestnuts, beeches, lindens and even tall sequoias. A deep pond brings water and light into the round. And right beside it all stands the fairy-tale Kasteel De Haar, with its towers rising above the trees. From the 18th tee you look straight at the castle as you play your final shot — a view you will remember long after the round.

The course is a par 71 over about 5,705 metres. With a slope of 142 it plays as a genuine challenge, so it rewards good shot-making and a clear head. Two holes stand out: the 7th, a lovely par 4 that asks you to carry water, and the 18th, a par 5 finishing under the gaze of the castle. The club is GEO-certified for its care of nature and was even named the best 9-holes golf club in the Netherlands by Golfers Magazine in 2018 — a sign of how much love goes into this place.

Because the course is challenging, it is best enjoyed once you have some experience and a handicap. That makes it a wonderful goal to play towards. With a few good lessons behind you, those tree-lined fairways and that water carry on the 7th become a real pleasure rather than a worry.

Let’s get you ready

A beautiful course like De Haar is even more fun when you feel confident over the ball. That is exactly what I love to help with. A lesson or two before you play — a steadier swing, a smarter way around the trees, a calm short game — turns a tough par 71 into a round you truly enjoy.

I teach at Chi Chi Golf in Utrecht and at Golfschool Hoenderdaal in Driebergen, and I welcome every age and level with the same warm, upbeat coaching. Whether you are picking up a club for the first time or polishing your game for courses like De Haar, we will work on it together, step by step, with plenty of smiles.
