Fairways of mown heather
Golfclub Ullerberg is a 9-hole heathland course on the Landgoed Ullerberg estate near Leuvenum, in Gelderland. Gerry del Court van Krimpen laid out the holes, and the club goes back to 1923 — this is old, classic Dutch golf. From the club’s own description, the fairways here are mown heather rather than grass, the greens are small, fast and natural, and the estate keeps its wildlife close: deer and wild boar live among the heather, which turns deep purple when it blooms. The par is 35 over 2,565 metres, and a full 18-hole round means playing the nine twice.

Reading the heather
Mown-heather fairways and small, fast greens ask for control, not muscle. The ground is firm and the targets are tight, so a repeatable swing and steady distance control matter more than length off the tee. That is the part of the game I most enjoy teaching — the quiet fundamentals that travel with you to classic ground like this.
