I teach golf every week near Utrecht, and the thing I love most is watching someone relax on a quiet course and suddenly enjoy the game. That feeling matters more than a perfect score. Some places just make it easier to slow down and breathe, and a peaceful club in the green countryside is exactly that kind of place.

Parkland golf in the quiet east

Golfclub Winterswijk sits far out in the east of Gelderland, in the calm, green landscape near the German border. It is a parkland course — soft, leafy, framed by trees — the kind of setting where the walk between shots is almost as nice as the shots themselves. Eighteen holes give you a full, satisfying round, with enough space that a new player never feels rushed or crowded.

What I like about this club is that it is built for real golfers of every level, not only low handicaps. There is a driving range to warm up and groove your swing, a pro shop when you need a glove or a few balls, and a cosy restaurant waiting for you after the last putt. Buggies and trolleys are there to rent, so a longer walk is never a reason to stay home.

The club is welcoming to beginners, and juniors are genuinely encouraged here — there is a golf academy right on site. This matters. So many new golfers tell me the same story: their very first round on a friendly, unhurried course is the moment they fall in love with golf. A calm parkland like this, with room to breathe and kind people around, is a lovely place for that first spark.

A quick practical note, because it saves surprises: a valid handicap is needed to play, the club is NGF-affiliated, and visitors are welcome with a member introduction. You can book your tee time online, which is easy and painless. A 9-hole round costs €45, and the full 18 holes is €75 — fair value for a relaxed day in beautiful surroundings.

A gentle parkland course rewards good, simple technique — a steady swing, a soft chip near the green, calm putting. These are exactly the things I love to teach, and they are simpler to learn than most people expect. Small steps. Small steps really do win in golf.
